Improving performance of BC buildings through mechanical insulation practice and standards

BC’s Mechanical Insulators commissioned leading planning and design firm HB Lanarc to bring an independent perspective to the issue. HB Lanarc authored a white paper showing how BC can save millions of dollars and eliminate thousands of tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year.

The White Paper identifies opportunities for action by a wide range of stakeholders, including:

  • Provincial and federal building code authorities
  • Utility companies
  • Local government elected officials and staff, including building officials, engineers, planners, and sustainability personnel
  • Trade associations and professionals interested in improving the quality of construction in British Columbia
  • Land and building developers
  • Large commercial building owners and managers

The highlights of the White Paper include:

  • Characterization of the State of Practice in the industry through interviews and a literature review
  • Identification of gaps in codes and standards
  • Modeled energy and GHG emissions for three case studies
  • Province-wide estimation of energy and GHG reduction potential
  • Systematic mapping of barriers and opportunities
  • Policy, financial and capacity building solutions targeted at key stakeholders
